It’s easy to appreciate trees when they are blooming with vibrant blossoms or coating our landscapes in a swath of green. But trees in winter provide equal beauty if we’re willing to appreciate the subtleties of their texture and form.
My grandfather’s 1936 essay Winter Beauty captures the unique qualities of trees-sans-leaves that create an aesthetically wondrous winter landscape:
As we enter this dormant time of year, I think it’s worth taking a moment to celebrate winter trees—evergreen conifers, twiggy deciduous trees spiking up into a sky the shade of bright blue that only winter can elicit, berried shrubs providing a pop of color to an otherwise monotone landscape. I’d love to hear from you all: what winter standouts and draw your attention over these colder months?
This was a hard one to answer since our winters tend to be so spent inside. I think what comes to mind for me is how droopy willows still look during the winter and how grand they appear with snow covering them.
I like the image of leafless trees against a clear blue sky with snow on the ground. A classic winter picture!
